MGHN Rajasthan

Rajasthan is reeling under the burden of preventable maternal deaths with an MMR of 318 as against the national average of 212 (SRS 2007-09). Its vast terrain comprising largely of deserts, extreme weather conditions coupled with socio-economic factors make access to quality maternal and child healthcare (MCH) a distant reality in remote hamlets and unaffordable in cities.

To contribute in the reduction of MMR in 19 high focus districts of Rajasthan, HLFPPT has partnered with global healthcare firm, Merck, to institute an economically sustainable, easily scalable and innovative social franchising model, called Merrygold Health Network (MGHN). MGHN provides high quality MCH services, safe abortions and family planning services at reasonable rates and promotes safe motherhood and institutional deliveries among the underserved.

For comprehensive coverage, the network has been tiered into:

  • Urban Merrygold or L1 Hospitals (equipped with MCH facilities including Emergency Obstetric Care & Family Planning services),
  • Rural Merrygold or L2 Clinics (with MBBS or AYUSH doctors at sub divisional level), and
  • Village-based Merrytarang Members or L3 (community health workers who can provide elementary MCH information and products to people and can eventually link them with L1 and L2 as required).
  • The three-year programme aims to establish 57 Social Franchisees (19 L1s and 38 L2s) and enroll 1,330 L3s in 19 high focus districts. In its inception year, the programme has successfully instituted MGHN network across 10 districts, with 19 SFs (10 L1s and 9 L2s) and 429 L3s, more than its targeted coverage of 8 districts.

During FY 13-14, the programme team has undertaken an array of Mid-Media activities including door-to-door awareness campaign by L3 members, reminder SMS to couples for increasing compliance for MCH services, 28 Health Camps and 26 Godhbharai ceremonies (baby shower). Besides, the programme has devised an exclusive toll-free helpline for educating prospective clients on the need and choices available for family planning.

To enrich service outcome value for MGHN patients, HLFPPT has leveraged platforms of flagship programmes like the Janani Suraksha Yojana, Rasthriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, Sterilization Camps and Shubh Laxmi Yojana. It has also partnered with diagnostic company Dr Lal Path Lab for conducting tests at subsidised rates for MGHN patients, and with Abhay Clinics for procuring vaccines for Hepatitis and Tetanus Toxide.

MGHN has been successful in facilitating 2,483 institutional deliveries and providing 17,519 antenatal and post-natal care services in its inception year.
